IRENG MAULANA & FRIENDS
The cream of Indonesia's jazz musicians feature in this series put together by Ireng Maulana,
one the country's top guitarists who taught himself to play and began his career at the age of 15.
Ireng and his brother Kiboud have been staples on the scene since the early 1980s and are favorites at the city's annual jazz festival.
He continues to record and perform with a number of legends in the business like
Ermy Kulit, Margie Segers, Kemala Ayu and many more who appear in this classic jazz collection.

Bill Saragih - Sing's And Plays

Bill Saragih (1933-2008) who passed away on 29 January 2008 is one of jazz maestros from Indonesia. His education background — as student of Berkeley College of Music — gave him a basic legitimacy for his career. More than that is his talent as entertainer and his unique voice — his soprano timbre voice – which made him very special. I saw his performance for the first time in 1998 for Tempo magazine first launching after banned by Indonesian government since 1994.

Fortunately we dont have data for his compositions and his album. When my friend Idrus F. Shahab from Tempo magazine asked about Bill Saragih album among my collections, I can not say any words because I dont have it. But last month, fortunately I find Bill Saragih album cassete entitled Sings ‘N Plays which consists of 12 songs. Five of them are composed by Bill Saragih, for instance Anna My Love, Tiana, Billy’s Groove, Tony’s Dream, and Song from My Father. This last song Song from My Father is slow jazz with ethnic lyric and accentuation. Truly superb melody. ( dikutip dari pringanhitam )

THE TIELMAN BROTHERS

The Tielman Brothers adalah sebuah grup musik asal Maluku, Indonesia. Musik mereka beraliran rock and roll, namun orang-orang di Belanda biasa menyebut musik yang mereka usung beraliran Indorock. The Tielman Brothers pernah tampil di Istana Negara Jakarta dihadapan Presiden Soekarno.

Karir rekaman mereka dimulai ketika keluarga Tielman pada tahun 1957 hijrah dan menetap di Breda, Belanda. Nama The Tielman Brothers lebih dikenal di Eropa, terutama Belanda. Di Indonesia sendiri, nama The Tielman Brothers masih menjadi nama yang asing, sebuah kenyataan yang sangat disayangkan.

The Tielman Brothers dipercaya lebih dulu memperkenalkan musik beraliran rock sebelum The Beatles. Aksi panggung mereka dikenal selalu atraktif dan menghibur. Mereka tampil sambil melompat-lompat, berguling-guling, serta menampilkan permainan gitar, bass, dan drum yang menawan. Andy Tielman, sang frontman, bahkan dipercaya telah mempopulerkan atraksi bermain gitar dengan gigi, dibelakang kepala atau dibelakang badan jauh sebelum Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page atau Ritchie Blackmore.

Sejarah

Perjalanan musik The Tielman Brothers dimulai di Surabaya pada tahun 1945, dimana empat kakak beradik laki-laki dan seorang adik perempuannya, Jane, sering tampil membawakan lagu-lagu dan tarian daerah. Kemampuan musik mereka diturunkan dari sang ayah, Herman Tielman, seorang kapten tentara KNIL, yang sering bermain musik bersama teman-temannya dirumahnya di Surabaya.

Berawal dari ketertarikan Ponthon untuk memainkan contrabass yang diikuti saudara-saudaranya yang lain. Reggy mempelajari banjo, Loulou mempelajari drum, dan Andy mempelajari gitar. Penampilan pertama mereka pada acara pesta di rumahnya membuat teman-teman ayahnya kagum dengan membawakan lagu-lagu sulit seperti Tiger Rag dan 12th Street Rag. Sejak saat itu mereka sering tampil di acara-acara pribadi di Surabaya. Tawaran tampil pun berdatangan dari berbagai daerah di Indonesia. Sampai pada akhirnya pada tahun 1957 mereka sekeluarga memutuskan untuk hijrah ke Belanda.
